My Place Is Not In The Kitchen

In Nigeria, being able to cook is a skill a young girl or woman should possess because not only does it signify good home training but it also better prepares the female for when she will one day become a mother and a wife. It is a source of pride for a woman to possess such a skill because it makes her more appealing to potential suitors because African men seriously love their food!  It also shows she will be able to smoothly run her home when the time comes. I would say it’s more a necessity than a part time hobby.

For some, cooking is very essential because it’s a part of a wife’s domestic role and a lot of African men can’t marry a woman who is unable to prepare a decent meal. Yeah we’re in the 21st century but this is still an important criteria. I’ve even seen Nigerian movies where a woman loses her husband to her maid or some other woman because of her inability to cook. As the saying goes, the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach! Lol!

I saw a movie where a girl was being forced into marriage by her mother with a man she didn’t love because he was wealthy. They were both arguing and her mum said to her “All this education is useless, all you need to know is how to cook and clean.” Hmm… I do believe a woman should be able to cook not only because she will one day have a family but also for herself. For how long will you order take out? It gets really tiring eating out all the time plus it’s healthier cooking at home because you’re in control of what and how much things go into your food. Don’t forget that it’s also a husband magnet here in Nigeria.  As much as I believe this is an important skill, I wouldn’t want to be confined to domestic roles and disregard my education because that’s also very important to me. I feel a woman who has an education plus good domestic skills is much more appealing than one who has just one or the other.

Then again, I don’t feel one should kill themselves if their unable to cook because it’s a skill and skills develop the more you work on them. If you didn’t grow up to home-made meals and would like to learn how to cook, there are bunches of classes out there to help you as long as that’s what you want. If you did grow up to home-made meals like I did, I think of it this way; wouldn’t you want the same for your kids?

Also in regards to education, it’s never too late to go back to school. A 78 year-old man graduated from college and if he can do it, you can too. It won’t be easy but it’s better than doing nothing at all. You’ll just have to decide it’s something you want for yourself.

Always,
Miss LAJA
