I was tagged in the Liebster award by Tiff of mabulledepensees. The essence of this tag is for you my dear readers to learn more about me and also discover new bloggers… Like me! 🙂

Who can be tagged? Any one can! In fact, I tag you!

Rules? Reveal 11 secrets about yourself, answer the 11 questions asked by the blogger who tagged you, make up 11 questions of your own and tag 11 other blogs! It’s that simple! Lots of 11s I know…

My 11 ‘Secrets’
  • I’m absolutely crazy about Beyonce… It’s almost unhealthy. She just inspires me so much. #BeyHive
  • I’m going to marry Ian Somerhalder one day… one day…
  • My favorite movie is Steve Harvey’s Think Like A Man and I cannot wait for the sequel to come out this year!
  •  I am an Amercian-born Nigerian. I was born in Dallas, Texas. I’m proud to be Nigerian/African and I express that in any way I can through my blog eg my excessive love for ankara material. Africa isn’t solely a continent with poor starving kids and I feel the negative aspects are publicized more than the positive which sucks.
  • I attend Duke University (It’s awesomeeeeeeeee!)
  • I absolutely love French language and culture. I’ve studied it for over 7 years and intend to continue doing so here in college.
  • God’s grace, I’d like to become a doctor specifically a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon.
  • I could talk about anything skin or beauty or self-care related all day if you left me or care to listen
  • I don’t like weaves. I have nothing against those who do but it’s just not my style. I tried weaves once but I couldn’t stand it and took it out after a week. Maybe I’ll change, maybe not.
  • My friends call me Lizard (gotten from Lisa… don’t ask how cause I don’t know either), Hairy and Bushy (I’m really hairy, it’s not funny)
  • I have conversations and debates with myself. It’s really fun, you should try it sometime.

Not to be cheesy but it was when I got my acceptance letter into Duke. I didn’t know my tear ducts had such stamina. I cried so much (tears of joy) God help me that my next door roommate came knocking on my door cause she thought I was dying or something. Poor child, she was half asleep and I was a happy mess.

8. The best trip you’ve made?
To New York for United Women’s Conference. It was crazy! This is going to change though, I have something awesome coming up 🙂

Black With A Touch Of Ankara

So I realized I’ve picked a habit of always talking about the weather in my outfit posts but I find that the weather really does have an effect on my mood. When it’s sunny, I feel happy and motivated to work but when it’s gloomy and dull, all I want to do is sleep. I absolutely dislike rain and cold so I won’t even go there…

Speaking of cold, it was FREEZING (two degrees Celsius) and windy but sunny. That’s a rather horrible combination and I might be smiling in these pictures but it was COLD. The struggle was real… Wow I just spoke on weather once again lol. Sorry guys!

For the outfit, I’m wearing another ankara skirt (if it’s not obvious already, I’m in love with ankara clothing soooo) and gloves were an absolute necessity!

Guyyyyss, it’s Thanksgiving coming up! I’m soo pumped and I’m so thankful for a lot of things. Life, health, family, happiness and the list goes on.

Hope you guys have a great break! And I’m sure I’m not the only one excited for Black Friday shopping! BRING IT ON!

Always,
Miss LAJA

My Yellow Ankara Jacket

This ankara jacket is the sibling to my yellow ankara skirt! And no it wasn’t planned. It just happened 🙂 I absolutely adore this jacket’s intricately trimmed edges. Its just so edgy and unique!

We had ‘family’ pictures at my church today for Christmas postcards and they handed out Christmas hats!

Christmas is coming and I’m so excited cause it means the school session is coming to an end and I finally get to back home and see my family and friends! Yay! But till then, I’ll have to hold on plus there’s Thanksgiving! As they say quitters never win and winners never quit! 😉

Do you like my swarovski crystal earrings? They’re by Fulfill Jewelry! Check it out here!

Yellow Ankara Skirt

This lovely yellow ankara skirt was quite a challenge matching up and I didn’t want to wear it just anyhow you know? I was kinda nervous cause the weather’s been bipolar all week so I was glad I got to where this outfit without freezing my butt off. North Carolina’s weather is really awesome! It’s amazing how warm it in November 🙂

Have a swell week!

Dark Flowers

It’s November already… How time flies!
The colours of this outfit are usually darker than what I usually wear but black is a classic colour so why not? Plus, it was kinda chilly so… Yeah 🙂

My hair’s purple, check out the details here

Have a fierce week guys!

Hair Talk: Purple WaterMelon

Yes yes, I got my hair done and it’s black and PURPLE! If you’re not already aware, I have a strong love for purple, orange, royal blue (well, in general bright colours)! So why not get purple highlights in my braids? Plus, I don’t think I will ever dye my natural hair so why not play with the colourful extensions out there? One thing I love about this hair( besides the colour of course) is it’s fullness. It’s also unique. I’m just going about with my bouncy hair feeling like a boss! Haha!

Us Nigerians call it “WaterMelon”. Why water melon? I have not idea and I don’t see any watermelon resemblances here but that’s what it is. It’s very easy to maintain and if you want to learn more about braids and how to maintain them, check here.

Share with me what you think in the comment box.
What funky things have you tried with your hair?

School Blues

It’s no lie that school can be stressful, overwhelming and sometimes almost unbearable. Sometimes, I wonder if teachers consider the fact that their course IS NOT the only one I take in school. Like, seriously?
Back in Nigeria in my former school, I used to think school was hard but now I’ve realized that I used to enjoy but didn’t realize it. I miss sleeping from Friday night to Sunday evening knowing I wouldn’t be screwed on Mondays cause I simply had no homework.

Those good old days…

Back to reality!  Since the work load doesn’t really get lighter (except you plan on failing your classes) but hey, don’t worry that’s why Miss LAJA is here…  You could get better at handling it so you don’t turn into a zombie. This is how I do it.

1)      Exercise

If it’s light jogging to swimming or even walking at least 2-3 times a week would do you good. If you play sports already, then you’re good like I used to row and had practice 6 days a week. It not only helps you look good but it also relieves stress and tension. I enjoy running and I do it at least 3 times a week from 45-60 minutes and also team it up with some strength training! Yeah, most of us have the debate where you’re thinking “I’m here and the gym’s all the over there and hmm… maybe I’ll go tomorrow”.  Sadly those “tomorrows” never come. *Abeg, I’m not saying you should go and kill yourself in the gym o! Start small and work your way up.

2)    Sleep

“Sleep? What’s that?” This is a very foreign word to most students cause you’re like “But I have this and that and that!”. Don’t worry, I do that too. When I said I could sleep from Friday to Sunday peacefully and be fine for school the next day? Hmm.. I’d better not try it now. My parents always tell me “If you’re tired, sleep” and I’m thinking “You’ve got to be kidding me! I don’t want to fail o!” This is true, you’re not doing yourself a favor by working on only 3 hours of sleep why not try at least 7/8hours?  Trust me, eventually you will crash. Been there, done that, got LOADSA t-shirts and eye bags and pimples.

If it’s still not sinking (I understand) then try sleeping in during the weekendso you’re replenished for the week ahead.

3)      Do something you enjoy

I tend to forget that I’m also a priority and if you do too, it’s time to change that! Watch movies/ TV shows, go out with friends, pamper yourself (manis, pedis, massages), read leisurely (NOT SCHOOL RELATED excepted reading your bio textbook is your idea of leisure reading then go for it)  etc.  You get the gist? For me, I LOVE reading novels! I could read and read and read. I also enjoy hanging out with friends. Usually we’d go out to the mall and have like a girls’ day out then we’ll have lunch or dinner at a nice restaurant or we’d go to the movies or do anything together. It’s nice getting away from all the Calc drama you know? I’m also a HUGE fan of The Vampire Diaries (Ian Somerhalder is my future husband). So if I’m lagging behind on some episodes, I catch up or I watch my favorite movie. It shouldn’t be that difficult to find what you enjoy could it?

4)    Talk to someone

Whether it’s your mum, dad, friend, gardner, gateman, whoever you feel comfortable with. If you’re stressed out, don’t bottle it inside. I talk to my parents and my friends. Sometimes you need people to remind you that you need a break. I know I do. Don’t have any friends or one to talk to? Talk to God, he’s always there to listen. I talk to him too.

5)    Dance

I organize dance parties in my room by myself and for myself. I turn up the music really loud and perform in front of the mirror. Singing however I want, dancing  however I want. Who cares? I’m going to rock  Crazy in Love”  even Beyoncé would doubt she sang it after she hears me.  You think I’m weird? Well, guess what? It’s works.

6)    Eating Healthy

Ok, I’m not saying I’m 100% good at this because I do love my chocolates and foods BUT I do make an effort. That’s a step in the right direction right? I take hydration very seriously so I drink water as often as possible over the course of the day and try to control how much sweet/fried stuff I eat.  Even with that, indulging in guilty pleasures isn’t a bad thing at all. I’m still young with a rocking metabolism so why not eat what I want while it lasts? I always tell myself after my 3rd bar of chocolate when all else fails, go to the gym.

7) Hi! I’m Prioritize, your new best friend!

If you haven’t taken anything away till this point, this is your best bet. Don’t mix this up with procrastination because there’s a huge difference. I usually got overwhelmed because I had so much stuff plus,  I wanted to get everything done ASAP and If I didn’t I started freaking out. This is probably the most important thing cause if you don’t try to be organized, having time for the other things listed would be almost impossible. I have a planner where I write all things I have to do ranking from most important to least important so I know how to use my time. If I don’t get it all done today, that’s fine I’ll finish it up tomorrow. It really works for me because I realize that I don’t have to fret about the English paper I have due in a month.

Ok, easier said than done but hey, Jordin Sparks said “One Step At A Time” and you should take that advice and start from somewhere. One thing you need to realize is that the work load never gets lighter or easier; you just get better at handling it. Yeah it sucks a lot but with practise and consistency, you’ll get better… B strong

Why don’t you tell me how you handle stress in the comment box? I’d love to hear!

                       Always,
                  Miss LAJA

Heeled Boots ‘N’ Ankara Jackets

This yummy jacket is another piece from my ankara collection that I’m really pumped to rock so I made it the statement of my outfit. And just a rewind, it was Nigeria’s independence approximate 13 days ago and she turned 53! I’ve never been more proud to be Nigerian and I pray God continues to prosper us.

Back to the outfit, I’m in soo in love with the jacket and boots and bag (it has something to do with my purple love) so everything combined just made me love this outfit a tad too much! Plus, the boots are comfy and add an edge to the whole ensemble… Double score!

Happy Fall Break!

Always,
Miss LAJA
