Hair Talk: Waist Length Chuku Braids

You all know that braids will forever be in vogue for me.

Since I’ve been back in Nigeria, I noticed that super long braids have become really popular but what really made me want to get mine done was after my mum did a hairstyle similar to this. I had no intention of braiding my hair just yet since I recently took out my Senegalese twists but my sister’s graduation was coming up and I was just hungry for braids as usual soooo this happened. Haha!
This style is most popularly know as a “ponytail” is actually called “chuku” in Nigeria.I did Ghana weaving with a side parting.
I used two and a half packs of Xpression extensions in my natural hair color (colour two).
For maintenance, I oil my scalp with Sulphur 8 or Damatol anti dandruff hair cream and clean with methylated spirit.
Duration: I would say 6-8 weeks if done properly.

I wanted something different as opposed to the single stranded braids I always do and I wanted to give my edges some rest (not that they were suffering or anything). I’m obsessed and I will be doing this style again. This is a great summer hairstyle! I definitely recommend it!

What do you think of the waist length braids trend? Are you feeling it or nah?

Black, Pink and Gold

I wore this jumpsuit to my sister’s graduation (YAY!)

I matched it with pink accessories from Fulfill Jewelry (seriously you guys should check them out). This six layered necklace is usually worn with traditional attire but voila! I present to you a way to match it with English wear.
I find that carrying stylish pouches is convenient for events like this. It fits little items like your phone and lipstick and you could hold it or throw it into your purse.

Oh, and new braids… Info over here.

Gele Chronicles: Flamingo

I played around with this look and I was quite nervous about the outcome. The last time I remember doing a bridal/engagement makeup and gele look was when I was 14. It feels good to be back. We’ll see how this goes.
Here is a pink engagement look. I will be doing more color combos in this series. If you follow me on Facebook and Instagram, you will see I already released a second look in addition to this one.

Who can be tagged? Any one can! In fact, I tag you!

Rules? Reveal 11 secrets about yourself, answer the 11 questions asked by the blogger who tagged you, make up 11 questions of your own and tag 11 other blogs! It’s that simple! Lots of 11s I know…
ย
My 11 ‘Secrets’
  • I’m absolutely crazy about Beyonce… It’s almost unhealthy. She just inspires me so much. #BeyHive
  • I’m going to marry Ian Somerhalder one day… one day…
  • My favorite movie is Steve Harvey’s Think Like A Man and I cannot wait for the sequel to come out this year!
  • ย I am an Amercian-born Nigerian. I was born in Dallas, Texas. I’m proud to be Nigerian/African and I express that in any way I can through my blog eg my excessive love for ankara material. Africa isn’t solely a continent with poor starving kids and I feel the negative aspects are publicized more than the positive which sucks.
  • I attend Duke University (It’s awesomeeeeeeeee!)
  • I absolutely love French language and culture. I’ve studied it for over 7 years and intend to continue doing so here in college.
  • God’s grace, I’d like to become a doctor specifically a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon.ย
  • I could talk about anything skin or beauty or self-care related all day if you left me or care to listen
  • I don’t like weaves. I have nothing against those who do but it’s just not my style. I tried weaves once but I couldn’t stand it and took it out after a week. Maybe I’ll change, maybe not.ย
  • My friends call me Lizard (gotten from Lisa… don’t ask how cause I don’t know either), Hairy and Bushy (I’m really hairy, it’s not funny)
  • I have conversations and debates with myself. It’s really fun, you should try it sometime.

ย
2. Why did you decide to create a blog?
I created this blog because I wanted to showcase the beauty of Nigerian/African culture but I can’t say that’s all I talk about. I also talk about things that have to do with college and anything self-care. Let’s just say a lot of things.

Not to be cheesy but it was when I got my acceptance letter into Duke. I didn’t know my tear ducts had such stamina. I cried so much (tears of joy) God help me that my next door roommate came knocking on my door cause she thought I was dying or something. Poor child, she was half asleep and I was a happy mess.

8. The best trip you’ve made?
To New York for United Women’s Conference. It was crazy! This is going to change though, I have something awesome coming up ๐Ÿ™‚

Purple Swag

Happy New Month everyone! December’s finally here and I couldn’t be anymore happier and grateful! Finals are around the corner (blehh) but so are the holidays so…

Anyways, I got see my parents for the short holidays and that’s always nice! And btw, my bag? It’s actually made out of jeans trousers! Talk about going green! I got it from an Arts market a while back.

As for the jacket, it’s actually for guys and it’s in a large so it’s extra snuggy and warm and purple and I lovvve it!

Black With A Touch Of Ankara

So I realized I’ve picked a habit of always talking about the weather in my outfit posts but I find that the weather really does have an effect on my mood. When it’s sunny, I feel happy and motivated to work but when it’s gloomy and dull, all I want to do is sleep. I absolutely dislike rain and cold so I won’t even go there…

Speaking of cold, it was FREEZING (two degrees Celsius) and windy but sunny. That’s a rather horrible combination and I might be smiling in these pictures but it was COLD. The struggle was real… Wow I just spoke on weather once again lol. Sorry guys!

For the outfit, I’m wearing another ankara skirt (if it’s not obvious already, I’m in love with ankara clothing soooo) and gloves were an absolute necessity!

Guyyyyss, it’s Thanksgiving coming up! I’m soo pumped and I’m so thankful for a lot of things. Life, health, family, happiness and the list goes on.

Hope you guys have a great break! And I’m sure I’m not the only one excited for Black Friday shopping! BRING IT ON!

Always,
Miss LAJA

My Yellow Ankara Jacket

This ankara jacket is the sibling to my yellow ankara skirt! And no it wasn’t planned. It just happened ๐Ÿ™‚ I absolutely adore this jacket’s intricately trimmed edges. Its just so edgy and unique!

We had ‘family’ pictures at my church today for Christmas postcards and they handed out Christmas hats!

Christmas is coming and I’m so excited cause it means the school session is coming to an end and I finally get to back home and see my family and friends! Yay! But till then, I’ll have to hold on plus there’s Thanksgiving! As they say quitters never win and winners never quit! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Do you like my swarovski crystal earrings? They’re by Fulfill Jewelry! Check it out here!
