Hair Talk: Waist Length Chuku Braids You all know that braids will forever be in vogue for me. Since I’ve been back in Nigeria, I noticed that super long braids have become really popular but what really made me want to get mine done was after my mum did a hairstyle similar to this. I had no intention of braiding my hair just yet since I recently took out my Senegalese twists but my sister’s graduation was coming up and I was just hungry for braids as usual soooo this happened. Haha! This style is most popularly know as a “ponytail” is actually called “chuku” in Nigeria.I did Ghana weaving with a side parting. I used two and a half packs of Xpression extensions in my natural hair color (colour two). For maintenance, I oil my scalp with Sulphur 8 or Damatol anti dandruff hair cream and clean with methylated spirit. Duration: I would say 6-8 weeks if done properly. I wanted something different as opposed to the single stranded braids I always do and I wanted to give my edges some rest (not that they were suffering or anything). I’m obsessed and I will be doing this style again. This is a great summer hairstyle! I definitely recommend it! What do you think of the waist length braids trend? Are you feeling it or nah? Gele Chronicles: Flamingo I played around with this look and I was quite nervous about the outcome. The last time I remember doing a bridal/engagement makeup and gele look was when I was 14. It feels good to be back. We’ll see how this goes. Here is a pink engagement look. I will be doing more color combos in this series. Hair Talk: Purple WaterMelon Yes yes, I got my hair done and it’s black and PURPLE! If you’re not already aware, I have a strong love for purple, orange, royal blue (well, in general bright colours)! So why not get purple highlights in my braids? Plus, I don’t think I will ever dye my natural hair so why not play with the colourful extensions out there? One thing I love about this hair( besides the colour of course) is it’s fullness. It’s also unique. I’m just going about with my bouncy hair feeling like a boss! Haha! Us Nigerians call it “WaterMelon”. Why water melon? I have not idea and I don’t see any watermelon resemblances here but that’s what it is. Hair Talk: All Natural So, I recently took out my braids. They were fun while they lasted but I really missed my hair and it was about time! After a trip to the saloon, here are the results! I’m soooo happy with where my hair’s at now; the length, the texture, everything! Woohoo! I’m looking forward to making it longer and even better! Hair Talk: Fish Bone I know funny nameā¦ š You may think itās weaves but itās actually braids. Iām not a fan of weaves… I prefer braids by far. I might change my mind later but for now, itās me and my braids. This style of braids resembles a style I did before called pick-and-drop (or watermelon if itās curled). The difference is fish-bone is woven to the back and the excess extensions are dropped from side to side as it goes (which is where it gets its name) while pick-and-drop are individual half-finished braids. You could choose to carry it normally and brush it when necessary like weaves. The other option (which I did) is to add hair gel and hair mousse to each individual ādropā to make it stiff and give it a shiny look but you wonāt be able to brush it. These donāt actually look like the typical braids and thatās why I love it. People usually confuse it for my hair. Lol! I did the short one with a center parting (it could always be longer with the parting of your choice) for a new look if not, Iām a sucker for long braids and I NEVER do center partingā¦ till now Maintenance With gel: use hair mousse to maintain the body and oil sheen for the scalp. If the braids bend of place, the mousse could be used to tame it back to place. Without gel: oil sheen for the body and the scalp and brushing when necessary. Hereās mine! Always, Miss LAJA
Hair Talk- Braids Well, braids are something I do ALL the time!It’s popular amongst female teenagers, adults and even the elderly so I’m not alone! Braids are a cool way to style the hair especially for people who have thick, coarse hair (mostly common amongst Blacks/Africans). Itās also another way to keep the hair neat for an extended period of time PLUS it can be styled in a variety of AWESOME ways. Not to seem biased but Iām a HUMONGOUS fan of braids cause I donāt have the patience to wake up every morning and style my hair. I would if I had to (donāt get me wrong) but why should I when I could style the same hair in millions of ways? I could also pull off the effortless I-just-woke-up-this-morning-and-my-hair-still-looks-great look. The best-est part is anyone can do it! Itās even a good way if you want to grow your hair and it could be done short, long, wavy, straight etc. One could also experiment with different colors of extensions! I adore highlights and itās a great temporary way to experiment with colors. I canāt think of any possible disadvantage except for the amount of time it takes to get it done! But this depends on the various criteria like size (the smaller the braid, the longer it takes), if the person doing the hair is fast/slow, if you have ā*pepper-bodyā (see meaning below) or not and thatās all I can think of. Price? Well it definitely depends on the saloon or individual that you choose. There are affordable hair stylists/saloon that do a good job and there are the high end saloons/stylist that make you look like a confused scarecrow when they finish with you and vice versa. *Pepper-Body- A Nigerian slang that describes someone who is restless and unable to stay still. (this has different meanings depending on the situation used. Youāll learn more along the way) This summer, I did long, wavy, braids (with highlights of course) and here are a variety of ways I style mine! This is just one of many styles out there! It’s really simple to maintain. You’ll have to apply braid sheen every other day to prevent your scalp from drying out and you could clean your scalp with Methylated Spirit and Cotton wool!
